SOLIDWORKS in 2023 by cost, reviews, features, integrations, deployment, target market, support options, trial offers, training options, years in business, region, and more using the chart below. This was the only pain, but worth it for what you get. What’s the difference between FreeCAD and SOLIDWORKS Compare FreeCAD vs.

To get it you have to register in order to get a password to put in when you install it. To export it as another format it’s a per translation fee of $50-60 for each model. From the list of formats, it looks as if its focus is on importing part files. I wasn’t able to import a Pro/E assembly either. However, you can save a SolidWorks Assembly as a part and import it.

Can’t Export to another format for free. While it doesn’t have as much functionality as something like SolidWorks, it is fairly intuitive and easy to create things even though there’s a little more clicking and dialog boxes. It fairly basic and takes some getting use to. You can also, model parts and assemblies, render, and make drawings. On top of just being able to view the file, you can make changes to, add geometry and get information from the model. That kind of things can provide a big performance boost.PowerSHAPE-e allows you to import a model from many of the most common 3D CAD Packages including SolidWorks, CATIA, PRO/E and Inventor. That would allow, for example, to keep one part with a lot of calculations in a file, and not have that calculation done in the file it is linked in. One thing the assembly module proposes to do, is to allow to link a part from another file in a model. Given the size of your model above, working with the Drawing module or the Drawing dimensioning module should still be very fast. Maybe some pieces you design don't need their parametric history anymore, etc.īut there might also be some problem with your install or your system. So basically you must be aware of that, and manage. That's why in FreeCAD most heavyweight stuff is done in C++. To complicate the matter further, python programs can sometimes be drastically slower than C++ programs. The more you put "intelligence", in other words, you force some calculation to be done under certain conditions, the more you slow things down. This is a tradeoff present in all parametric apps (at least those I tried). What takes time, are as you say the calculations. When you perform "basic" stuff, you can easily manage a huge quantity of data, being Parts or Meshes. There are probably several different issues in what you are describing Renato.įreeCAD itself is not particularily "slow". All this, i repeat, only if i have designs whit different objects, as that i put down.

The programm thinks too much for doing its work. In "drawing dimensioning" it is impossile to put the dimensions. Even when i am working with "drawing" i have found different problems of velocity in creating the page and in the changing of the parameters (as the scale of the design). The objects are loaded in a right velocity, but the problems are when i have to modify them, in particular when i am in "assembly 2" and i have to do differents constraints (the program thinks a lot for any constraint and it goes in default). Something that FreeCAD does not currently do, and OCE does on a very limited basis.Īs i have said i have realised some projects, and the only difficulties are been the slow velocity that i think to have found with complex objects. The one thing that would speed this up would be for FreeCAD and OCE to take 100% advantage of multiple processors. So the more complex the model, the longer it takes to reconstruct as it goes through all the saved steps in creating the model. When FreeCAD loads a file, I'm pretty sure it reconstructs the model as it is being loaded. FreeCAD features tools similar to CATIA, Creo, SolidWorks, Solid Edge, NX, Inventor, Revit, and therefore also falls into the category of building information. The Nvidia Quadro line will do quite well with a 3D CAD program. At the same time a top of the line video card designed for 3D CAD will do poorly with 3D games. A top of the line 3D gaming video card will not do so well displaying 3D from a CAD program.

When you say "slow velocity" are you talking about the speed it loads a file, (large files can be slow to load), or are you talking about the frame rate of the display? Not having a windows machine that would be capable of running solidworks, even if I had a pirated copy, I have no idea how fast it loads, but as for display, CAD programs use a video card quite differently than a 3D game uses them.
